Julius Caesar Essay: The Character of Brutus -- Julius Caesar Essays
The Character of Brutus in Julius Caesar à à à ââ¬Å"Et tu Brute?â⬠Caesarââ¬â¢s simple statement sums up Brutusââ¬â¢ round character in the development of The Tragedy of Julius Caesar. Brutus was thought to represent no threat due to his nobility and his loyalty; however, these qualities are precisely why the story is such a catastrophe.à What stemmed from these traits is the last expected outcome.à Caesarââ¬â¢s surprise was so immense, he could only mutter these last few words.à Brutusââ¬â¢ honorable nobility, his loyal patriotism, and his naà ¯ve and idealistic manner define Shakespeareââ¬â¢s tragic hero. à à à à à à à à Honor is an underlying foundation of Brutus and can be clearly seen during the playââ¬â¢s dramatic speeches.à Brutus himself makes his honor apparent in his orations.à After the assassination of Caesar and during the funeral speech, Brutus asks the people of Rome, ââ¬Å"Who is here so rude that would not be a Roman?à If any, speak; for him I have offendedâ⬠(act III, sc ii, ln 29-32).à This in Brutus proves he is noble as he cares and protects the welfare of the people and Rome as a whole.à He is torn between his sense of duty with Rome and his friendship with Caesar.à In the end; however, he must rationalize his actions to save face and conform to both sides of his conflict.à Furthermore, Brutus tries to prove his nobility to virtually everyone. When Brutus utters his last words, he tells Caesar his intentions, ââ¬Å"I killed thee with half so good a willâ⬠(act V, sc v, ln 50-51).à His honor is always persistent and never fails to prevail at even the most taxing and awkward situation.à Brutus considers his honor in every aspect and choice in his life and often rules over his own accord.à Accordingly, many people, including his enemies, were very m... ...t categorized with his honor, his loyalty to Rome, and his naive and idealistic disposition.à à Works Cited Bloom, Harold. Ford Motor Company Case Essay
Ford Motor Company Case 1. Does Ford have too much cash? 2. How does VEP work? 3. What are the alternatives for distributing cash? 4. What problems is the VEP plan designed to solve? 5. As a shareholder, how would you approve the VEP? Would you elect cash or stock? Q.1) Does Ford have too much cash? Exhibit 6, 8, and 9 (figures in $ millions) provides selected balance sheet items for Ford, General Motors, and DaimlerChrylser. The given information indicates that Ford carries the highest amount of cash and marketable securities among the three companies. In 1999, Ford had $25,173 of cash and marketable securities while General Motors and Daimler-Chrylser have only $12,140 and $9,163. Comparing at an industry level, we as a team inferred that Ford may be carrying too much cash. Ford competes in an industry that is notoriously sensitive to the economic cycle, and generally companies in cyclical industries have to keep cash in reserve to cover up for cyclical downturns. However, high amount of cash in the balance sheet does not necessary signal that a companyââ¬â¢s future earnings has a high potential of growth. A company sitting on cash tends to lose the opportunity to gain high returns generated from expanding business or investing in new projects. Keeping excess cash in the bank would be a mistake when the company could use the cash to earn a higher return than the companyââ¬â¢s cost of capital. It is important to note that although Ford holds the highest amount of cash, both Fordââ¬â¢s earnings per share of 5.86 and stock price of $51.38 are lower than General Motors and DaimlerChrysler in 1999. Fordââ¬â¢s higher debt to equity ratio during this period may be the reason that caused the companyââ¬â¢s cost of capital to increase and eventually decreasing the stock price. Q.2) How does VEP work? The main function of the Value Enhancement Plan (VEP) consists of both the options of stock repurchase and a stock exchange. Through this plan, shareholders would exchange their existing common stock and class B shares,à one-for-one for new Ford common and new class B shares. Moreover, shareholders would receive either $20 per share in cash or the equivalent value in new Ford common shares based on Fordââ¬â¢s price in July 2000. Shareholders who did not make an election would be treated as if they made a $20 all-cash election. Meanwhile, if the cash option was oversubscribed, the $20-per-share payment would be distributed pro rata to ensure that the company distributed at most $10 billion. Dividends on the new shares would be reduced such that shareholders who elected stock only would get the same dividend payment on their package as the quarterly $.50 per share currently being paid. A third option the company offers to the shareholders allows them to receive a combination of ca sh and stock worth of $20. Q.3) What are the alternatives for distributing cash? Share Repurchase ââ¬â Institutional shareholders urged Ford to conduct share repurchase over paying dividends. But Ford preferred receiving cash dividends since that provided the family members with liquidity without having to sell Class B shares and run the risk of diluting familyââ¬â¢s control. (Ford had 1.15billion common shares and 70.9million Class B shares outstanding. The family retained a 40% vote as long as it owned 60.7 million shares. Reduction below 60.7million until 33.7million would reduce the familyââ¬â¢s voting power to 30%. Below 33.7% of Class B sharesââ¬â¢ ownership, all privileges would be lost) Mr. Ford had said that the family had agreed to take its portion of the distribution in the form of new common shares, not cash. The family thus would have tens of millions of common shares to sell for liquidity purposes without reducing their holding of Class B shares. Pay Dividends Uniformlyââ¬â W.r.t. the Value Enhancement Plan, dividends on new shares would be reduced as there was a $10billion limit to distribute cash. Dividends with incremental growth in value are absent. Ford wants to keep a large amount of cash to itself because of the uncertainty associated with the cash flow. It has the option to distribute the cash in the form of dividends. Shareholders were taxed on cash dividends at ordinary income rates whereas gains realized on shares that were repurchased received capital gains treatment. There were no cash deductions for the company in the above two methods. Hence both theà procedures were same for the company. 4. What problem is the VEP plan designed to solve? The primary reason why Ford designed the VEP was that Ford believed its stock was undervalued and the undervalued stock was limiting the companyââ¬â¢s ability to use its stock for acquisitions or to attract, retain or incentivize employees. Ford thought the VEP would enhance the value of its outstanding shares because the recapitalization will highlight its cash reserves and cash flow generating capacity, and also indicates managementââ¬â¢s confidence in the future of the business. In addition, Ford believed the adjustments in the employee incentive plans by the recapitalization will tie Ford managementââ¬â¢s compensation even more closely to the performance of its stock price. Additionally, as a part of VEP, Ford announced the Visteon spinoff was not only designed to allow Ford to focus on its core business but also give Visteon a chance to build its client base outside Ford. However, some analysts and shareholders (TIAA-Cref, Calpers) argued that the VEP was designed to av oid a risk that Ford could face due to a share buyback. Because a share repurchase would reduce its voting right in the company, the Ford family considered VEP as a suitable option. 5. As a shareholder, how would you approve the VEP? Would you elect cash or stock? At face value the VEP seems to be a good idea; return value to stockholders in the form of cash, without having to compromise control over the company. As is gleaned from the case, Ford has approximately 23 billion dollars in cash reserves with the proposed VEP set to return up to 10 billion USD back to shareholders. Executive leadership tout flexibility, liquidity and alignment as advantages of the proposed project, however, a couple of valid questions have been raised (two institutional investors in particular). The proposed VEP if successful would see the cash reserves of the company reduced by 10 billion, this drastic reduction in cash will send mixed signals to analysts and the market as a whole. It could be perceived as a ploy to return money to shareholders in anticipation of a wind down or poor run of performance. Though flexibility and realignment is mentioned, that does not seem to be the case. The program only allows owners of both common shares and class B shares the opportunity to obtain liquidityà without having to lose control of their class B shares. The program will have the Ford family exchanging their common shares for the new stock in addition to the $20 or new stock options. This is particularly a welcome boon (as the case alludes to their need for liquidity to handle settlement of divorces and estate taxes). If the stock of Ford is perceived undervalued then the advice would be for the shareholder to accept the VEP as the share price increases in an addition to the opportunity to reinvest in the additional new common stocks. In conclusion we would not approve of the VEP as we believe the benefits of the program does not benefit all stockholders, rather the pros are stacked in favor of the Ford family. On the contrary a common stockholder will accept the VEP and accept cash payme nt if the stock was perceived to be overvalued and further stock options if the stock was perceived to be undervalued. The Endâ⬠¦.

The Theory Of Crime Causation - 871 Words
One of the important goals to criminology is to create valid and accurate theories of crime causation. A theory could be defined as a statement that explains why a certain circumstance does not happen. A valid theory should always have the ability to predict future occurrences of the circumstance in question and also have the ability to be tested (Siegel, 2013). Even though there was talk on the code of law and how crime should be handled from years ago, according to Siegel, the science of criminology is somewhat new. Back then; people believed that individuals who did not fit in with the society would automatically be labeled as witches or someone who was possessed by something that was not human. Cesare Beccaria was one of the first to theorize that crime is a product of a personââ¬â¢s choice and can be controlled using methods of deterrence. Since then, criminologists have expanded on the idea and have developed new ways as to why people commit crime; all including theories suc h as biological, psychological, and sociological causes for crime (Siegel, 2013). Biological theories of crime made the assumptions that physical traits can lead an individual to criminal activities. Biological theories of crime causation were initially based on the assumption that delinquency is inherited. Physical attributes were known to pass down from parent to child. Over the time, the biological theories tended to emphasize more on the fact that offenders have different reasons to explain whyShow MoreRelatedThe Theories Of Crime Causation Essay1414 Words à |à 6 Pages Theories of Crime Causation Dolores Jackson Williams Colorado Technical University Juvenile offender 1. Italian Reflexive Verbs - I Verbi Riflessivi
What is an Italian reflexive verb (verbo riflessivo)? This can often be a strange topic because, in English, verbs arent often thought of as being reflexive, however, in Italian, a reflexive verb is one when the action carried out by the subject is performed on the same subject. So for example, ââ¬Å"I wash myselfâ⬠or ââ¬Å"I sit myself in the chairâ⬠. The subject, ââ¬Å"Iâ⬠, am doing the washing and the sitting. Itââ¬â¢s important to know that not all verbs are reflexive, but there are plenty out there and each must be memorized. What Does a Reflexive Verb Look Like? In order to make an Italian verb reflexive, drop the -e of its infinitive ending and add the pronoun si. For example, pettinare (to comb) becomes pettinarsi (to comb oneself) in the reflexive. Si is an additional pronoun, known as the reflexive pronoun, which is needed when conjugating reflexive verbs. Note that some reflexive verbs can be used without the reflexive pronouns. In this case, their meaning changes: - Alzarsi to wake up/to get up Tu ti alzi. (You get up.) Tu alzi la sedia. (You lift the chair.) How Do You Conjugate Reflexive Verbs? Here are some tables of verbs in the present tense so you can get an idea of how reflexive verbs are conjugated. Innamorarsi - To fall in love Mi innamoro - I fall in love Ci innamoriamo - We fall in love Ti innamori - You fall in love Vi innamorate - You (all) fall in love Si innamora - He/she falls in love Si innamorano - They fall in love Sedersi - To sit oneself/To take a seat Mi siedo - I sit (myself) Ci sediamo - We sit (ourselves) Ti siedi - You sit (yourself) Vi sedete - You (all) sit (yourselves) Si siede - He/she sits (him/herself) Si siedono - They sit (themselves) Divertirsi - To enjoy oneself/to have fun Mi diverto - I have fun Ci divertiamo - We have fun Ti diverti - You have fun Vi divertite - You (all) have fun Si diverte - He/she has fun Si divertono - They have fun What About With the Past Tense? When you conjugate reflexive verbs in the past tense, you must use ââ¬Å"essereâ⬠as your auxiliary verb. Hereââ¬â¢s an example using the verb ââ¬Å"svegliarsi - to wake upâ⬠. Svegliarsi - To wake up Mi sono svegliato/a - I woke up Ci siamo svegliati/e - We woke up Ti sei svegliato/a - You woke up Vi siete svegliati/e - You all woke up Si svegliato/a - He/she woke up Si sono svegliati/e - They woke up Notice how the last letter of ââ¬Å"svegliatoâ⬠changes. Thatââ¬â¢s because the ending must agree in gender and number with the subject. Differences between WICA and Common Law7.Appraise whether the third party or his Insurer can raise any Objections to this claim of Special Damages by Ravi Answers: 1.Proper Layout and Sufficient Space In order to maintain a healthy and safe workplace, proper housekeeping is mandatory. According to Agwu and Ajayi (2014), a poor housekeeping can expose workers to hazards. Some of the hazards include slipping, hitting objects, and tripping on objects. In this case, managers should come up with plans to establish good housekeeping, for instance, orderly storage of materials. Similarly, managers should establish sufficient space in the workplace in order to accomplish a given task (Agrahari, Dangle Chandratre, 2015). An ideal workplace requires adequate space, tools, and the people to carry out the task. All materials and equipment tend to be in the way of a systematic flow of movement around the workplace and a proper assessment of the tasks space requirements can help come up with a proper layout. A well-designed workspace that is organized for efficient flow of work helps in boosting productivity and the ease of completing certain activities (AgwuAjayi, 2014). Appropriate Storage and Handling of Materials Correct storage together with the handling tools such as the forklifts, engineered shelves, conveyor systems and handling robots help in the movement and placing of materials in a workplace or storage site. This helps to avoid hazardous storage without blocked pathways or any obstructions to the access of things such as the fire control equipment. Poor storage may cause piling of unwanted inventory and waste materials(Randhawa, Ahuja Ahuja, 2017). Therefore, managers should come up with strategies that ensure proper handling and storage of materials in order to assure workers of their safety. General orderliness and tidiness In order to achieve orderliness and tidiness in the workplace, the following tips should be considered: All spillages should be cleaned up immediately. Ripped, worn, and damaged flooring should be replaced and anti- slip floors used in areas that are not cleaned continually (Agrahari, Dangle Chandratre, 2015). Light fixtures should be maintained to improve lighting Stairways and aisles should be kept clean, also, warning signs should be installed to improve prospect in dark corners. Overall, any workplace needs to have all of its working space cleaned, well arranged and uncluttered through frequent housekeeping and disposal of rarely used items or those, which are no longer needed. Hygiene and safety should always be upheld to maintain a conducive working environment (Osman, Awang, Hassan Yusof, 2015). 2.To begin with, the working environment is clean and organized in a conducive manner. Specific actions of sorting, straightening, shining, and standardizing 5S helps to attain a tidied up workspace that is well arranged in an orderly manner. In addition, the quality of the goods and services being produced improves with fewer cases of complaints, wastes, and rejects (Singh, Rastogi Sharma, 2014).Moreover, the functional operations are more efficient and productive. Each activity is carried out systematically in a subsequent manner and in the end; there is standardization that helps sustain a culture of efficient productivity.Furthermore, there is increased safety at the workplace. For instance, waste and excess items and unwanted inventory are disposed of, this frees up space in a heavily trafficked environment that could potentially cause a worker to trip over, and get injured (DewiSetiawan, 2013). In addition, the 5S program helps to create a more spacious storage area due to the freed up space that can be utilized more efficiently. It helps in reducing the square footage for the required space for current activities. Further, implementation of the 5S helps in boosting the workplace morale because employees achieve a heightened sense of pride in their tasks and they fully own their responsibilities at work (Agrahari, Dangle Chandratre, 2015). This is as a result of the routine procedures that help minimize backslides and disorganization. Lastly, the positive results of a 5S program are clearly visible to everyone including outsiders and this helps in enhancing the image of the organization. This is because the work environment is conducive and safe enough to foster efficiency in productivity and cultivate more profitable business results(Lerssi, Hopsu Salmi, 2014). Therefore, an ideal working place should be one that adheres to tidiness and cleanliness to assure its workers their safety. Hence, managers should come up with strategies that assure workers th eir safety. 3.First, training would help sustain employees momentum and interest in the 5S program. Basic 5S training should be carried out to those who are not familiar with the 5S and effective housekeeping concept. An advanced training on 5S should be conducted as a follow-up on the 5S implementation to those who are already in the program. Refresher training done in frequent intervals is recommended in revisiting the 5S fundamentals and benchmarking among colleagues across departments (Sahu, PatidarSoni, 2015). Communication and creating awareness is the other area whereby management could come up with 5S slogans on stickers, banners, or posters with memorable messages. These banners, posters, newsletters, photo exhibits, pocket manuals, and handbooks could help in promoting a culture of good housekeeping and communicating the 5S concepts (Agrahari, Dangle, Chandratre, 2015).In addition, continuous learning in forums such as 5S in-house seminars where there are internal talks on implementati on challenges encountered and how they were overcome could help sustain the program. Department tours through model departments that have implemented the 5S program help in gaining an understanding of the various 5S approaches and cultivate a commitment to the 5S activities. Moreover, creativity and innovation could be used to sustain interest in the 5S implementation. 5S projects could be set up with teams to work on the housekeeping domain by identifying the required resources and putting them into use (Gupta Jain, 2015). 5S friendly competitions between departments or project teams to foster continuous creativity could be carried out. Furthermore, awards and recognition systems could be set up for departments, individuals, and teams that have attained an outstanding 5S performance. This could also go out to those who win 5S competitions and those who do well in a 5S audit in forms such as cash bonuses, meal vouchers, movie tickets, management commendation, or any kind of an awar d (Goriwondo, 2013). Therefore, departments should use the 5S programs to cultivate commitment of the employees in the organization. 4.According to Singapores laws and regulations, the plaintiff can raise an objection to the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) assessment where his injury worsens. There must be medical evidence that is objective showing that the very same workplace injury has become worse and requires more medical attention. Ravi will be eligible to receive medical and time-loss benefits. He could also claim that since the assessment, he has experienced emotional distress which has been a result of the physical injury suffered. Further, where the injury caused Ravi to discontinue any physical activity, hobby or sport that he was engaging in before the incident, he could object the assessment made by the Commissioner. In addition, the plaintiff can raise an objection claiming that the $42,000 paid for medical expenses and the medical leave wages do not fully compensate him for the injury and damages suffered following the work-related injury. He can appeal for a larger amount of compensation (Singapore, Mini stry of Manpower, 2014) 5.The employer and the insurer can raise objections on to whether the injury suffered was work-related or not as stipulated in Singapores Work Injury Compensation Act Chapter 354. The employer can dispute a claim that intends to cover a pre-existing condition of the plaintiff that was not a consequence of the work injury. The insurer could also dispute a claim being made on an expired insurance policy. In addition, Geo Insurance Company could object the injury claim if the employer under-declared the number of employees to the insurer, an action that resulted in some of the employers, Ravi being one of them being uninsured. They must, however, complete and submit the objection document attached to the Notice of Assessment (NOA) issued by the Singapores Ministry of Manpower in 14 days. Following these objections, a panel that is appointed by the Work Injury Compensation Medical Board will assess Ravis injuries and it is made up of two senior consultants from any restructured hospitals. The objecting party, in this case, the insurer or the employer will pay the Medical Board a fee of $357 and any other costs of tests needed by the board. The objection will be struck off if these fees are not paid on time. Another objection could be whether the average monthly earning of the employee shown in the Notice of Assessment (NOA), is correct(Butler, GardnerKleinman, 2013). The objecting party must produce evidence and documents that support their objections. Where the objection made cannot be substantiated, it is struck off. The case proceeds to the Labor Court for further hearing if at all the dispute cannot be settled at the conference (Singh Ahuja, 2015). Therefore, by submitting the objection document, the insurer and the employer can raise objections of whether the injury was suffered by the plaintiff. 6.Differences between WICA and Common Law When it comes to making a claim, with WICA the claim is made with MOM and is decided upon by the Assistant Commissioners. However, with the Common Law, the claim is made with the High Court. Another difference is that one does not need a lawyer with WICA and it is only optional to engage legal representation since MOM will guide you through the claim process. In Common Law, you will need a lawyer and will have to pay a legal fee (Hua, 2014). In addition, the amount of compensation in WICA is determined by a formula and it has limits while in Common, Law there are no limits but one needs to prove the damages suffered before the court. The final difference is that under WICA you will have to prove that the injury was work-related but there will be no need to prove negligence or fault on anyone while in Common Law you will have to prove that your employer was at fault(Wong Choy, 2015). 7.According to Singapores regulations, the third party or his insurer can raise objections on a plaintiffs claim of special damages in the High Court. The objections could be on whether Ravis condition is worsening as an actual result of the injury suffered at work or is it due to other factors such as failure to adhere to the already paid for medical services. In addition, the objection could also be in determining whether the injury has really worsened since the assessment or the injury has remained constant or even improved. The insurer could also object by arguing that the damages and compensation formula used to calculate the extent of Ravis injury determined the final worth of his claim. Moreover, if Ravi makes a poor appearance to the High Court as a witness and does not communicate effectively the events surrounding his accident, the third party can object the special claims. If Ravi fails to identify the precise grounds for his special claims, the third party would get a pla tform to raise objections. Where the insurer does not concur that the plaintiff suffered emotional distress as a consequence of the incident, the insurer could dispute the special claims. The third party could also dispute the plaintiffs claim of special damages if there has been deliberate self-injury or aggravation of the injury. Further, the insurance company can object Ravis special claims in the case where witnesses such as the employer and the medical board assessing his injuries dispute his version of facts for the claim and they substantiate the defendants version. Finally, if they do not agree that he has discontinued the specified physical activities, hobby or sport due to the injury, they could raise objections. The defendant could claim that Ravi is exaggerating his complaints as compared to the medical records presented (Lilley, Davie, Langley, Ameratunga Derrett, 2013) References Agrahari, R.
